Green tea originates from China and has associated with many cultures in Asia from Japan and South Korea to the Middle East. Many varieties of it have been created in countries where it is grown. These varieties can differ due to variable growing conditions, processing, and harvesting time. The secret of it lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant. It can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque.

Here are the tips on preparing a better cup of green tea.

  1. One cup of tea requires 1 tea spoon (about 5g) of tea leaves.
  2. Prefer loose green tea leaves over tea bags. Tea bags are for convenience but for authentic taste, you have to go for loose leaves. Loose tea leaves are much cheaper than tea bags.
  3. Use a ceramic pot for making tea instead of metallic one.Heat the water to 80-85 C but definitely not more than that. Making the water to boil completely will burn the leaves & hence the taste.
  4. When steeping the leaves, let it be in water only for 2 - 2.5 minutes. If you keep steeping for more than 2.5 minutes, tea will have bitter taste.
  5. You can use the steeped leaved for second time too if preserved properly.
  6. Do not add milk to green tea.
  7. Green tea contains powerful antioxidants that are involved in the prevention of cellular damage
