Recent Medical Studies show that a diet rich in garlic and onions can have a profound effect on heart health.
While science has come up with many ways to help you after you have a heart attack, nature has provided a way to help stop one from occurring in the first place. The European Journal of Nutrition recently published studies which show that people who eat more vegetables from the allium family (garlic, onions, leeks, shallots) have a reduced risk of heart attacks. Researchers studied the eating habits of 760 patients who have had a heart attack and 681 who had not. They found that those who ate one serving of garlic along with one serving of onions per week could lower their risk of heart attack by a combined average of 19 percent.

Scientists are still looking into as to exactly how garlic and onions prevent heart attacks; they believe that there are certain compounds in garlic and onions that contribute to the thinning of blood and help lower blood pressure. Other studies on garlic show that sulfide compounds produced when garlic is crushed or chopped help relax the walls of arteries and veins, allowing for less platelet clumping. Other studies show that sulfides (which also give garlic its wonderful aroma) also help lower cholesterol and triglyceride counts.
