Herbal Remedies May Not Cure ADHD But Can Be A Useful Supplement
Sometimes fantastic claims are made for herbal remedies in that they can cure ADHD! This is patently untrue because clinical research is lacking so making a claim like that is superficial to say the least. Similar claims are made for conventional psychostimulants which in my opinion are even worse in that their side effects only add to the child's problems.
So, let us look at what herbal remedies can do and how they can supplement your child's diet so that he is getting the best of all possible nutrients for his brain. After all, the root of the problem is here because the neural pathways are imbalanced and slightly out of sync. It is rather like a faulty cell phone signal. The child is perceiving a range of messages and signals but has enormous problems in prioritizing them and acting on the most important ones. Imagine not being able to filter out sounds when you are on the cell phone in the shopping mall! ADHD is a little like that.
Herbal supplements can not cure ADHD but they help the brain to function better. Green tea contains the famous amino acid called L-theanine. It is also found in other teas such as the famous oolong tea.
The great thing about this amino acid is that it can calm the brain while staying alert at the same time. This is because it can stimulate the alpha brain waves and can also produce more of the GBA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which is great for helping us to relax and stay calm. As you can imagine that is a great help when you have a hyperactive child who never stops.
You can buy these L-theanine supplements which sometimes contain other calming herbs such as skullcap as well. It would be impossible to give your child so much green tea if you were ever to reach the right daily dose.
Now there are not enough studies on L-theanine and ADHD to show that it can be beneficial but anecdotal evidence shows that children who are disturbed by the side effects of drugs like Vyvanse and Adderall actually gained weight and started and eating and sleeping normally again once they started taking these supplements.
Figures from the World Health Organization show that the vast majority of the world's population are so poor that they have no choice but to use herbal medicine for curing any ailments that they may have. Some figures put this as high as 80% so nothing wrong with hebal medicine.
What are the other herbal remedies which are can help cure ADHD or at least treat it so that symptoms are less troublesome? The list includes the following:-
• Ginkgo Biloba- can calm, help with attention span and insomnia
• Valerian - helps children sleep
• Skullcap - may help with restlessness
• Lemon Balm - soothes and calms without drowsiness.
Most herbal remedies can help with many of the ADHD symptoms but you would need to consult a qualified herbalist before giving these to children as there are sometimes very mild side effects.
Homeopathic remedies are superior as a cure for ADHD as they have no side effects at all and there are certainly no health risks either. That is why I have built a website to explain all this. Perhaps this could be the way to avoid our children getting hooked on psychostimulants and help them grow up happy and well balanced.
