While jogging has some benefits, fitness experts recommend using it as a warm-up before sprinting, which has more strength-building effects. Sprinting targets the following muscles:

While jogging also helps burn calories, experts recommend sprinting as the best form of cardio to maintain a healthy weight and stay in shape. Studies have shown that you can burn 200 calories in two and a half minutes of high impact sprinting. If you fast for 15 minutes, that amount equals 1,200 calories burned.

Another benefit of sprinting is EPOC, also known as post-exercise maximal oxygen consumption, which allows the body to burn calories even after you finish your workout.

Increase your exercise performance

When you do short, high-intensity runs, you're using all of your strength and muscle power. It may be easier to jog, but you can get more results in a shorter amount of time. For example, one hour of cardio jogging equals 10 sprints in 15 minutes. Not only is it effective for staying in shape, but it increases your workout in less than half the time.

Strengthen your core

The strong aerobic capacity of sprinting makes it better than jogging, especially when it comes to reducing belly fat, waist circumference and overall weight. As certified strength and conditioning coach Brandon Hall explains, interval training burns visceral fat, which is stored in your abdomen and is often the most stubborn type to get rid of.

If you want to strengthen your abs as part of your fitness goals, sprinting is definitely the way to go. In fact, a study from the University of New South Wales found that participants jogging for 20 minutes three times a week for 12 months burned more visceral fat than jogging.
